You are at the top. Summit of the Ecrins, the Barre offers you an unforgettable 360° panorama, after climbing a ridge that leads you into the world of altitude: you are at 4102 metres.

Programm

Security warning :
The early season route is no longer used because of the significative danger of serac falls.
The new route is more direct, less exposed but more difficult. That’s the reason why the price has increased.

– On the first day, you will meet your guide directly at the White Glacier Refuge, which you will have reached in a two-hours hike from Mrs Carle’s meadow.
Rope on the White Glacier, you’ll be able to find back your crampons sensations during the ascent to the next refuge of the White Glacier sector, the Ecrins refuge (3170 m) where you’ll spent the night.
– The second day, you’ll begin you ascent by night lightened by your headlamp. You’ll climb the Ecrins snow dome in about 3 hours of hike, and then reach the western edge of the Barre des Écrins at the Lory breach.
Then it is the beginning of a rocky journey above 4000 meters of altitude to the highest point, the Barre des Écrins. Nothing is higher, you’ve done it.
You’ll be back to the White Glacier refuge in the early afternoon where you can have a good meal to celebrate your ascent before returning to the valley.

Equipment

– Mountain pants.
– Warm under clothes.
– Warm fleece jacket.
– Waterproof and breathable jacket.
– 2 pairs of gloves, hat.
– Warm socks.
– Sunglasses, sunscreen for face and lips.
– Medium capacity backpack (30 to 40 litres).
– A minimum of one litre bottle, groceries and picnic.

– Headlamp with batteries in good condition.
– bed sheet. No need for sleeping bags (there are blankets at the refuge)

– alpinism shoes with stiff soles that can be fitted with crampons (check with your crampons before you hike to the refuge) (1)

Access

The White glacier refuge is accessible by foot from Mrs Carle’s meadow where you can park your vehicle (large car park). About 700 m. of ascending elevation. To access Mme Carle’s meadow, you have to go through the valley, from L’Argentière la Bessée (Hautes Alpes), Vallouise, Pelvoux and Ailefroide. There is a train station at L’Argentière la Bessée called "l’Argentière les Ecrins".

Level

The Barre des Écrins is an difficult summit, which requires good mountaineering skills and to have experience in high mountain. The final aerial ridge is made of rocks which provides the joy of a one-hour climb up and down. In heavy snow conditions, climbing is done with crampons.

Price

This price includes the services of a high mountain guide from the Bureau des Guides et Accompagnateur des Écrins. It does not include the possible rental of the equipment, nor the accommodation in a refuge and your meals / snacks.

Period

Race scheduled during the summer between June and mid-September. On request outside these dates. The Ecrins refuge is guarded depending on the year until mid-September. After this date you will have to consider making your own meal on site with a stove.
